How to convert Excel to JSON online

  1. 1

Upload an .xlsx, .xls, .xlsm or .ods file by clicking the upload box or dragging the file onto it.

  2. 2

The first row of each sheet is used as the JSON keys, and every following row becomes one object.

  3. 3

If the workbook has several sheets, pick a sheet from the list to preview its JSON.

  4. 4

Click "Copy" or "Download". With several sheets, "Download all (ZIP)" saves one JSON file per sheet.

Example: an Excel sheet as JSON

| 2 | Liam Chen | Austin | 72000 |

Tips for converting Excel to JSON

Numbers stay numbers

Cells that hold numbers in Excel are written as JSON numbers, and text cells as strings, so the output is ready for APIs and code.

Dates as ISO strings

Excel dates become ISO 8601 strings such as 2021-03-15, which every programming language can parse.

Empty cells

Empty cells are kept as empty strings, so every object has the same keys.

Clean header row

Short, unique headers without spaces, such as hire_date, give you JSON keys that are easy to use in code.

Excel to JSON FAQ

Is the Excel to JSON converter free?

Yes. It is free, with no sign-up and no file limit.

Is my spreadsheet uploaded to a server?

No. The workbook is read in your browser, so your data never leaves your computer.

What happens with multiple sheets?

Each sheet that contains data becomes its own JSON file. You can preview them one by one or download them all as a ZIP.

Are formulas converted?

The JSON contains the calculated values that Excel saved in the file, not the formulas.

Which Excel formats are supported?

.xlsx, .xls, .xlsm and OpenDocument .ods files.
