Example: nested JSON to an Excel sheet

JSON input

[
  { "name": "Emma", "address": { "city": "Seattle" }, "zip": "02134" },
  { "name": "Liam", "address": { "city": "Austin" }, "zip": "73301" }
]

Excel sheet

| name | address.city | zip   |
|------|--------------|-------|
| Emma | Seattle      | 02134 |
| Liam | Austin       | 73301 |

Tips for converting JSON to Excel

Nested objects

Nested objects are flattened into columns with dot names such as address.city, so no data is lost.

Several sheets at once

If the top level is an object of arrays, such as {"users": [...], "orders": [...]}, each array becomes its own sheet.

Leading zeros are kept

Values like 02134 and numbers longer than 15 digits stay text, so ZIP codes and IDs are not changed.

Different keys per object

Columns are the union of all keys, in the order they first appear. Missing values are left empty.

JSON to Excel FAQ

Is the JSON to Excel converter free?

Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no row limit.

Is my JSON sent to a server?

No. The workbook is built in your browser, so your data stays private.

What JSON structure is supported?

An array of objects works best. A single object becomes one row, and an object whose values are arrays becomes one sheet per array.

How are arrays inside a record handled?

Arrays and deeper structures are written into the cell as JSON text, so you can still read them in Excel.

Which programs can open the file?

The .xlsx file opens in Excel 2007 and later, Google Sheets, LibreOffice and Numbers.
